What Is Modern Muay Thai ?

 
It's a sport, a martial art and undeniably an art form. The combative science of Muay Thai, known throughout the world as Thai boxing, is also the national sport of Thailand.



      The roots of Muay Thai reach back thousands of years, perhaps with origins now known as China, however, Muay Thai remains entwined in the history of Thailand. The Royal Thai Army has always trained its soldiers using Muay Thai techniques to protect Thailand’s borders from invaders. With it’s cultural contradiction of a marriage based in grace and savagery it brings forth an art form filled with ritual that is today, been proven to be extremely effective for self-defense purposes, and is taught to men, women and children in over 80 countries around the world. Its devastating effectiveness has gained the respect of martial artists worldwide!

       Today Muay Thai is seen in the Ultimate Fighting Championships being widely used in the fastest growing sport of mixed martial arts! It is considered most effective in hand to hand combat and utilizes all the body’s natural weapons, ultimately known as the Art of Eight Limbs; hands for powerful punches, legs for furious kicks, piercing knee strikes to crushing elbows and skillful grappling, Muay Thai has it all!

     
Women's Muay Thai in Thailand was not allowed for many years due too superstition. Woman were not allowed to train in the sport with men, step in a ring, or use boxing equipment. Today, due to foreign interest in the art, it is becoming more accepted, where schools will have a ring specially built for women allowing them to train equally alongside men.


     Thankfully times have changed, and Women are now allowed to compete at local venues as well as the famous Lumpinee Stadium for Championship belts!
